Nomenclature Note In earlier versions of this database, as in the World Checklist and Bibliography of Fagales (1998), a basionym was incorrectly given as Q. nigra var. marilandica L. (1753). It has been pointed out to the compiler (J. H. Wiersema, pers. comm.) that this information was incorrect. Linnaeus, in his Species Plantarum page 996 does not in fact give a nomen triviale to his variety of Q. nigra, but merely cites the phrase name Quercus marilandica folio trifido ad faffafras accendendente taken from John Ray (1628-1705) by Mark Catesby (1682-1749) in his Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands… page 19 (1731) Information revised 28/03/2008 | ||||||||||||
